The five parts of Panchang

Study Tithi, Vara, Nakshatra, Yoga and Karana in sequence.

What does Panchang mean?

Panchang studies five components: Tithi, Vara, Nakshatra, Yoga and Karana. Tithi is based on the angular separation of the Sun and Moon. Vara is read in a tradition connected with local sunrise. Nakshatra relates to the Moon’s position, Yoga to the combined longitudes of the Sun and Moon, and Karana to half a Tithi.

How is it different from a calendar date?

A Gregorian date changes at midnight, while many Panchang traditions give importance to sunrise. A fast or festival date may differ by city, sunrise and the tradition used. State the location and rule before asking which date is correct.

Exercise: For one place, record sunrise and the Tithi and Nakshatra at that time. Compare the next day to see that a Tithi does not always change at midnight.

Care in reading

Local tradition and the rules used by the Panchang compiler matter for religious observances. When comparing Panchangs, also check the Ayanamsha, longitude and observance rules. Basic Panchang knowledge supports the early study of Jyotish.
