Getting started with Jyotish

Understand the study sequence before reading the ascendant, planets, signs and houses.

Where should you begin?

Begin by separating birth time, location and calculation assumptions, then learn the symbols in a chart. Planets, signs and houses answer different questions: what indication is being considered, which sign contains it, and which life area is involved? A planet is read with all three together.

A useful sequence

  • Astronomical foundations, local time and basic Panchang terms.
  • The ascendant, twelve signs and twelve houses.
  • Planetary positions, aspects and house ownership.
  • Dashas and transits in relation to the natal chart.
A small example: Hearing “Aries” does not tell you whether the speaker means the Sun, Moon or ascendant. Ask for the context first.

Calculate before drawing conclusions

A few minutes’ difference in birth time can affect the ascendant or the discussion of a house boundary. Record the chart source and calculation method. Combine several indications rather than making a final judgment from one planet or yoga.

Continue with signs, houses and Panchang.
